| Location
The small Sauternes region is located on the left bank of
the Garonne River, about 40 kilometres south of Bordeaux.
Château Monteils stands at the gateway to the Sauternes
region, in the parish of Preignac, one of the 5 villages that
have the privilege to claim the “Appellation d’Origine
Contrôlée” (AOC)
Sauternes.
The vineyard, about 12 hectares large all in one piece (about
30 acres), surrounds an elegant manor house from the 18th
century. Due to the very low yield of the vines (natural and
planned, see AOC), production stands at approximately 35,000
bottles per year.
History
Although “late harvest” (Vendanges
Tardives) techniques have been known since Antiquity,
it is only in the 16th century, under the impulse of Dutch
merchants demand that the Sauternes region started developing.
Hervé Le Diascorn, descendant from the Raba and the
Gaussem families, winegrowers since the beginning of the 19th
century, perpetuates the tradition of elaborating great sweet
wines in the Bordeaux region (The
Family History).
Hervé Le Diascorn’s objective is, on one hand
to maintain the handicraft know-how necessary to take the
best from the natural treasures of the local soil (terroir)
in order to get exceptional wines, and on the other hand to
benefit from the modern contributions so as to guarantee to
the consumer a perfect quality of service.
Other productions
and counsel activities
Hervé Le Diascorn produces, in the parish of Gabarnac,
another sweet white wine called Château
Lamothe Gaussem (AOC Cadillac).
Château Lamothe Gaussem also produces Red wine (Premières
Cotes de Bordeaux Rouge or Bordeaux rouge) and Rosé
which are very specific and rare productions (100% Cabernet
Franc, aged in oak casks, about 8,000 bottles a year).
Hervé Le Diascorn also works as a Consultant especially involved in auditing, restructuring and valuing winegrowing estates.
